13. The Zachary Beanie

Hello lovelies and welcome to day 13!
Today's pattern is probably a little more on the complex side, and would suit an advanced beginner. If you need help with this stitch, jump on google, there are a few videos for it. Once you've done it a few times though, it really is super simple. The side puff makes a lovely texture and really adds some pop to this hat! This one will fit a brand new baby at 40 weeks gestation.

Sized To Fit:
40 weeks gestation/Newborn Baby

You Will Need:
4.5mm hook
DK weight/8ply yarn in main and contrasting colours.

All stitches are in American terms.

Special Stitch: Side Puff - (you will be working over the post of dc just made) [yo, pick up a loop around post of dc just made] 3 times, (7 loops on hook) yo, draw through 6 loops on hook, yo, draw through last 2 loops.

With main colour
1: Into a magic ring, ch3, dc 12 times, join to the first dc. - 12

2: Ch3 (counts as a stitch here and throughout), dc in the same stitch, 2dc in each stitch around, join to ch3. - 24 (6.5cm/2.5”)

3: Ch3, dc in the same stitch, dc in the next stitch, *2dc in the next stitch, dc in the next stitch*, repeat around, join to ch3. - 36 (9.5cm/3.7”)

4: Ch3, dc in the same stitch, dc in the next 2 stitches, *2dc in the next stitch, dc in the next 2 stitches*, repeat around, join to ch3. - 48 (12.5cm/4.9”)

5: Change to contrasting colour, ch1, sc in each stitch around, join to ch1. -48

6: Change to main colour, ch1, sc in the same stitch, sc in each stitch around, join to ch1. - 48

7: Change to contrasting colour, ch3, skip the next stitch, *dc in the next stitch, side puff, skip the next stitch*, repeat around, join to ch3. - 23 side puffs

8: Change to main colour, ch1, sc in same stitch, sc in each stitch around, join to ch1 - 48

9: Change to contrasting colour, ch1, sc in the same stitch, sc in each stitch around, join to ch1. - 48

10: Change to main colour, ch1, sc in the same stitch, sc in each stitch around, join to ch1. - 48

11-14: Repeat rounds 7-10

End off and weave in tails.

Finished measurements: Total height 13.5cm/5.8” and total width across the brim 18cm/7”

12. The Jack Beanie

Welcome all to day 12. Today's beanie is a sweet earflap beanie with a side cluster stitch. It looks great in a solid colour, but also when you use a contrasting colour for the side cluster round.

I think, of all the beanies I designed this year, this one would have to be one of my favourite.

You Will Need:
DK weight/8ply yarn
4.5mm hook

All stitches are in American terms

Special Stitch: Side Cluster: Worked around the bar of the stitch before it. *yo, pick up a loop around the post of the previous stitch, yo, pull through 2 loops* (2 on hook), repeat from * to * (3 on hook), repeat from * to * (4 on hook), yo, pull through all 4 loops.

1: Into a magic ring, ch3, dc 12 times, join to the first dc. - 12

2: Ch3 (counts as first st), dc in the same stitch, 2dc in each stitch around, join to ch3. - 24. (6cm/2.3”)

3: Ch3 (counts as first st), dc in the same stitch, dc in the next stitch, *2dc in the next stitch, dc in the next stitch*, repeat around, join to ch3. - 36 (9cm/3.5”)

4-6: Ch3 (counts as first st), dc in each stitch around, join to ch3. - 36

7: Ch3, skip the first stitch, *dc in the next stitch, side cluster, skip 1*, repeat around, skip the last stitch and join to the ch3. - 18 clusters + ch3

8: Ch1 (counts as first st), sc in each stitch around, sc in the joining stitch from the previous round, to make up for the skipped stitch, join to the ch1. -36

9: Ch1 (counts as first st), slst in the same stitch, slst in the next 4 stitches, hdc in the next 6 stitches, ch1, turn, hdc2tg 3 times, ch1, turn, sc 3, end off. Count off 14 stitches and rejoin yarn with a slst, ch1, hdc in the same stitch and the next 5 stitches, ch1, turn, hdc2tg 3 times, ch1, turn, sc 3.

10: Ch1 (counts as first st), sc in the end of each earflap row, sc in each stitch around to the next earflap, work a sc in the end of each earflap row, a sc along the top of the earflap and a sc in the ends of each earflap row, continue to sc in each stitch around, sc in the end of each earflap row, sc in each st along the top of the earflap and join to the first sc. End off and weave in tails


Finished Measurements: Total height from crown to brim 11cm/4.3”, height from crown to bottom of earflap 12.5cm/4.9” and width across brim 14cm/5.5”
