Button Me Up Romper - Newborn Crochet Pattern

Hello beautiful people!

We're almost at the end of March, which means a new newborn sized pattern. YAY!

Today I have something a little different for you. I'm always looking for clever ways to make classics, and this just so happens to be one of those. This romper is side opening! It's one piece, and the back wraps around bubs sides, and buttons to the front of the piece!

Now, how you choose to do the wrap is your choice! I went with the side flaps under the front, and the buttons are sewn to the side flaps. However, you could just as easily sew the buttons to the front, and have the side flaps come up and over the front panel and close that way. Totally up to you which way you go.

The other thing about this pattern is that it uses Worsted Weight yarn! I know, it's not something I do a lot. I just don't have access to a steady stream of this weight of yarn. But I do love it for newborn projects, because boy do they work up FAST!

Today I've used Red Heart Super Saver Solids for the romper, but any Worsted weight yarn would be fine.

This romper is made in one piece, with the exception of the straps, so no joining here, there and everywhere! I've left mine plain, because I haven't yet decided on a recipient, but there are a lot of options for decorations. You could add a pocket. Sew on a flower. Embroider or top stitch an animal or even add some ruffles to the legs!

My doll is wearing a modern cloth nappy, which is quite bulky, so you can see how easily it fits over diapers.

Ok, let's get to it!!

You Will Need:
5mm Hook
Worsted Weight/Aran/10ply Yarn in a main and a contrasting colour.
6 matching buttons

Sized To Fit:
0-3 Months (Newborn)

1: Ch32, dc in the 3rd chain from hook and each across. - 30

2-8: Ch3, turn, dc in each stitch across. - 30

9: Ch1, turn, slip stitch in the first 3 stitches, dc in the next 24 stitches, leave the last 3 stitches unworked. - 24

10: Ch3, turn, dc2tg twice, dc in the next 16 stitches, dc2tg twice. - 20

11: Ch3, turn, dc2tg twice, dc in the next 12 stitches, dc2tg twice. - 16

12: Ch3, turn, dc2tg twice, dc in the next 8 stitches, dc2tg twice. - 12

13-20: Ch3, turn, dc in each stitch across. - 12

21: Ch3, turn, 2dc in the first stitch, dc in the next 10 stitches, 2dc in the last stitch. - 14

22: Ch3, turn, 2dc in the first stitch, dc in the next 12 stitches, 2dc in the last stitch. - 16

23: Ch3, turn, 2dc in the first stitch, dc in the next 14 stitches, 2dc in the last stitch. - 18

24: Ch3, turn, 2dc in the first stitch, dc in the next 16 stitches, 2dc in the last stitch. - 20

25-32: Ch3, turn, sc in each stitch across. -20 End off yarn.

Adding Straps

On the back section of the romper (the edge with the starting chains), count in 9 stitches and join yarn.

1: Ch2, hdc in the same stitch, hdc in the next 2 stitches. - 3
2-16: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across. - 3 End off.

Turn the piece over and count in to the 9th stitch on the other side of the back section and attach yarn. Repeat as for first strap.

Trim:

1: With contrasting colour join to the first stitch on row 32, ch1, sc across (20), continue to sc around the entire piece (working in row ends on the strap and main piece sides), straps included. When you reach corners, make 2sc in them to help with turning, join to the first hdc.

2: Ch1, fpsc around the first stitch, bpsc around the next stitch, *fpsc around the next stitch, .bpsc around the next stitch* repeat around. Join to the first sc.

Alternative Finish: 2: Reverse SC (crab stitch) around.

Attach buttons! You won't need button holes, the buttons should just slot through the stitches.

Makena Newborn Bolero

Morning all!!

I'm so excited about today's pattern! I have to say, I am having an absolute BLAST working on some larger items! It's a huge contrast to the teeny little clothing items I usually make.

Today I'd like to share with you all the pattern for a simple but pretty bolero. I just love these little shrugs, so sweet and dainty and perfect for when the temperature cools off that little bit in the evenings, or when the wind picks up. They look especially sweet over dresses. I loved putting these on my girls when they were smaller.

This one, made as instructed, will fit a baby of 0-3 months, and you should have no problems whipping it up in an afternoon. Oh I love a quick project, don't you?

Makena Bolero

You Will Need:
4.5mm hook
8ply/DK Yarn in main and contrasting colours ( a 100g ball will be PLENTY!)
A button for closing

Sized To Fit:
0-3 months

BLO - Back Loop Only
hdc2tg - half double crochet 2 together

Starting on the back panel (top down)

1: Ch32 loosely, hdc in the 3rd chain from hook and each across. -30

2: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across. -30

3: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across, BLO. -30

4-9: Repeat rounds 2 and 3, a total of 3 times. -30

10: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across. -30

11: Ch3, turn, skip the first 2 stitches, *(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in the next stitch, ch2, skip the next 4 stitches*, repeat across until you have 2 stitches left, skip the next stitch and dc in the last stitch. End off.

Adding the front panels

1: With the right side of the piece facing up join your yarn to the right hand side (using the chains from the first row), ch2, hdc in the same stitch, hdc in the next 4 stitches. -5

2: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across. -5

3: Ch2, turn, in BLO, hdc in the first 4 stitches, 2hdc in the last stitch. -6

4: Ch2, turn, 2hdc in the first stitch, hdc in the last 5 stitches. -7

5: Ch2, turn, in BLO, hdc in the first 5 stitches, 2hdc in each of the last 2 stitch. -9

6: Ch2, turn, 2hdc in the first stitch, hdc in the last 8 stitches. -10

7: Ch2, turn, in BLO, hdc in the first 8 stitches, 2hdc in each of the last 2 stitches. -12

8: Ch2, turn, 2hdc in the first stitch, hdc in the last 11 stitches. -13

3: Ch2, turn, in BLO, 2hdc in the first stitch, hdc in the last 4 stitches. -6

Stitch the side seams together from rows 9 to 11 on both sides.

Sleeves
Sleeves are continual but turned rounds, so that our blo texture is the same as the body of the bolero up until round 12, where we stop turning.

1: Join yarn to the rear of the armhole, and ch2, hdc evenly for 30 stitches around, join to the first hdc.

2: Ch2, turn, *hdc in the first 13 stitches, hdc2tg*, repeat once, join. -28

3: Ch2, turn, in BLO, *hdc in the next 5 stitches, hdc2tg*, repeat 3 times, join. -24

4: Ch2, turn, *hdc in the next 4 stitches, hdc2tg*, repeat 4 times, join. -20

5: Ch2, turn, in BLO, hdc in each stitch around, join. -20

6: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch around, join. -20

7: Ch2, turn, in BLO, hdc in each stitch around. -20

8-11: Repeat rounds 6 and 7

12-13: Ch2, hdc in each stitch around, join. -20

Change to your contrasting colour

14: ch1, sc in each stitch around, join. -20

Change to main colour

15: Ch3, skip the first 2 stitches, (hdc, ch2, hdc) in the next stitch, *ch2, skip the next 4 stitches, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in the next stitch*, repeat 3 times, join to the second chain in the starting ch3.

Change to contrasting colour.

16: Ch3, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in the next ch2 space, ch2, *skip the next ch2 space, (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in the next ch2 space, ch2*, repeat twice, join to the second chain in the starting ch3.

End off and weave in tails.

Repeat all sleeve instructions for the second sleeve.

Trim and Finishing.

With main colour, join the yarn to the left hand corner of the bolero and ch1, sc evenly around the front opening and neckline for 70 stitches, until you reach the other corner. End off.

With contrasting colour

Join your yarn to the same left hand corner, ch3, skip the first 2 stitches, (hdc, ch2, hdc) in the next stitch, *ch2, skip the next 4 stitches, (hdc, ch2, hdc) in the next stitch*, repeat 12 more times, which will bring you to the next corner, hdc in the corner stitch and ch2, (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in the next ch2 space, *ch2, skip the next ch2 space, (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in the next ch2 space*, repeat across, when you reach the end, ch2 and join to the 2nd chain in the starting ch3.

End off and weave in all tails.

Position and attach button to the desired area.

Short Overalls for Newborns

Good afternoon lovelies!

Wow it's been a busy few weeks. We just got back from our first family vacation in 2 years! Woah! So much fun though, but not a lot of time for crochet, so I'm sorry we missed a week there.

Today's pattern is something that's been on my todo list for a long time, and has been requested a few times over the years. Short overalls! Oh my word, these are just all sorts of adorable! They would be great as everyday wear, but also fantastic as a photography prop!

The doll I use wears a cloth diaper too, so you know it'll fit over babies butt!

It's simple enough to make, but it does use the best part of a ball of Red Heart Super Saver, so make sure you have enough on hand. They have ribbing around the back of the waist and the legs to help with fit.

Short Overalls

Sized To Fit:
Newborn

You Will Need:
5mm hook
Worsted Weight Yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver in Blue Tones
2 Buttons

1: Ch17, dc in the 3rd ch from hook and each across. -15dc 2cm wide. 11cm long

Count the starting chain as a stitch from here

2-4: Ch3, turn, dc in each stitch across. - 15dc, 6cm wide, 11cm long

5: Ch3, turn, dc in each stitch across, ch40, careful not to twist, join to the top of the ch3. - 55 stitches

6:  Ch3, dc in the first 15 stitches, dc in the next 40 chains, join to the top of the ch3. 55dc

7: Ch3, dc in the first 15 stitches, *fpdc around the next stitch, bpdc around the next stitch*, repeat around, join to the top of the ch3.

8: Repeat round 7.

9-16: Ch3, dc in each stitch around, join to the top of the ch3. - 55dc, 23.5cm from row 1-16. 15.5cm from row 6-16. 24cm across at the widest point.

17: Ch3, dc in the next 10 stitches, skip the next skip the next 29 stitches, dc in the last 15 stitches, join to the top of the ch3. First leg started. - 26dc

18: Ch3, dc in each stitch around, join to the top of the ch3. - 26dc

19: Ch3, *fpdc around the next stitch, bpdc around the next stitch*, repeat around, join to the top of the ch3.

20: Ch1, *fpsc around the next stitch, bpsc around the next stitch*, repeat around, join to the ch1. End off, First leg complete. -26 stitches, 6cm from rounds 17-20, leg is 10cm wide.

21: With the front facing up, rejoin your yarn (with a long tail to sew closed gap) to the second unworked stitch (see photo below) and chain 3, dc in the next 25 stitches, join to the top of the ch3. - 26dc

22-24: Repeat rounds 18-20 to complete the second leg. Sew the gap closed.

To make the straps:

1: Mark off the centre 9 stitches at the back of the overalls (see photo below) and join your yarn to the first one (to the right) Ch3, dc into the next 8 stitches. - 9 dc (counting the starting chain)

2-5: Ch3, turn, dc in each stitch across. - 9dc

6: Ch3, turn, dc in the next 3 stitches. Leave the rest unworked. - 4dc

7-17: Ch3, turn, dc in each stitch across. - 4dc

End off at the end of row 17 and rejoin the yarn to the outermost unworked stitch of row 6.

Repeat rows 6-17 for the second strap.

End off, weave in all tails.

Where you place the buttons comes down to your own personal preference. The dc spaces are large enough to work as button holes. I prefer to place my buttons on the strap and have it sitting behind the bib, but you may like to sew your buttons onto the bib and have the strap on the front. Either way is fine.

To finish off your overalls and add some neatness to the edges, join your yarn to any stitch on the top of the bib, and ch1, sc around the entire bib, the side of the overalls, evenly around both straps, across the second side of the overalls and back to where you started on the bib.Weave in all tails and you're done!
