IBGHD 2019 Day 26 The Austen Samuel Haldane Hat

Good morning all, hello to day 26!

Today's pattern is another Lisa Robson design! I love the simplicity of this hat. It's designed for a full term newborn, and would look fantastic solid, with a contrasting edge, or even in stripes!

This pattern is in remembrance of  Austen Samuel Haldane.

Connor Blanket - May CAL Part 5

Good afternoon all. Well, here it is! The last 3 rounds for this crochet along!

I truly hope everyone has enjoyed this pattern. There have been a few hiccups along the way with typo's and I am truly sorry for that. Not enough proof reading on my behalf! I feel like I'm a little out of practice, it's the first pattern I've put up in a very long time. Promise the next one will be much better <3

Errors aside, if you've got to this point you should have a pretty round baby blanket! I am so pleased with the stitches of the Connor blanket!

Now a note on the edge. Once you get to the end of the blanket, you'll notice a slight ruffle. This is pretty typical of most round blankets. Your options are to leave it, or to block it (using a method that works with the yarn type you've used) Personally I like it like that, so I've left it, but if I was going to flatten the blanket completely I'd go with a soak in water and pinning it out to a board to dry.

Be sure to add your finished photos over on the Ravelry project page, I'd love to see what your end products look like! If you are in Australia and are looking for a home for your blanket, I can't recommend Chance's Clothes Project enough! Every donated item gets used to make amazing bereavement packs distributed freely across Australia.

Enough chatter though, let's finish this blanket!

Pattern Notes:

Starting chain is counted in the final stitch count, and counts as the first stitch of each round.
Instructions within * * are to be repeated.
slst - slip stitch
picot - ch3, slst into the first ch.

With colour C

27: Ch3, dc in the same stitch, dc, hdc, sc, 3sc in the ch3 space, sc, hdc, dc, *2dc in the next stitch, dc, hdc, sc, 3sc in the next ch3 space, sc, hdc, dc* -308 stitches

With colour A

28: Ch2, in back loop only for all stitches on this round, hdc in the next stitch, sc in the next 4 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next 4 stitches, *hdc in the next 2 stitches, sc in the next 4 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next 4 stitches*, repeat around, join to the ch2. -348

If you want to make your blanket larger, you can jump back to round 4 and repeat the rounds until the blanket is the size you like. If you are not going to do all the rounds from 4 back to 28, I recommend ending on a round that has a straighter edge (not one of the chain rows for instance) and then completing the picot edging. The edging is a 4 stitch repeat, however because it's a simple picot edge you can change the placement easily enough and make it any stitch number repeat you like.

With colour A

29: Ch3, dc in the next 2 stitches, picot (to make a picot ch3, slst into the first ch), dc in the next stitch, *dc in the next 3 stitches, picot, dc into the next stitch*, repeat around, join to the ch3.

That's it lovelies, you are finished! WOOHOO!!

Chris Jacket - Free Newborn Crochet Pattern

Good morning all and welcome to May's newborn pattern.

The Chris Jacket has been something I've had in the works for a while, and you may remember I used the same stitch for a pair of Preemie Pants back in 2015.

Gosh, I really do love this little jacket. Just enough texture to mix it up, but not too busy, and very neutral. It's a quick make too, and wouldn't take more than a day to complete,  making it perfect for last minute baby showers. Made as instructed, this jacket will fit a newborn baby, up to maybe 2 months, depending of course on bubs size.

The Chris Jacket

Sized To Fit:
Newborn to 2 months

You will need
4mm hook
DK weight (8ply, light worsted) yarn in main and contrasting colour. 1 100g ball of the main colour is plenty.

3 stitch markers

1: Chain 50, hdc in the second chain from hook, hdc in the next 2 chains, 2hdc in the next chain, *hdc in the next 3 chains, 2hdc in the next chain*, repeat across, hdc in the last stitch. - 61

2: Ch3, turn, *skip one stitch, dc in the next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch*, repeat across, dc in the last stitch. - 61

5: Ch2, turn, *hdc in the next 7 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch*, repeat across, 2hdc in the last stitch. - 83

6: Ch3, turn, *skip one stitch, dc in the next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch*, repeat across, dc in the last stitch. - 83

7: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across. - 83

8: Ch2, turn, *skip one stitch, dc in the next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch*, repeat 6 times, chain 5, skip 18 stitches, dc in the 19th stitch, dc in the 18th (previous) stitch, *skip one stitch, dc in the next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch*, repeat 9 times, chain 5, skip the next 18 stitches, dc in the next stitch, dc in the previous stitch, *skip one stitch, dc in the next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch*, repeat 4 times, dc in the last stitch. - 59 including chains

9: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch and chain across. - 59

10: Ch3, turn, *skip one stitch, dc in the next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch*, repeat across, dc in the last stitch. - 59

11: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across. - 59

12-17: Repeat rows 10 and 11.

18: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across. End off.

Sleeves.

1: Attach yarn to any stitch towards the back side of an arm hole and ch2, hdc in the same stitch and evenly hdc around the arm hole for 28 stitches, join. (28)

2: Ch2, *hdc in the next 5 stitches, hdc2tg* repeat around, join. - 24

3: Ch3 *skip one stitch, dc in the next stitch, dc in the skipped stitch*, repeat around, join. - 24

4: Ch2, hdc in each stitch around, join. - 24

5-10: Repeat rounds 3-4. - 24

11-12: Ch1, sc in each stitch around. - 24

End off and weave in all tails. Reattach yarn to the second arm hole and complete 1-12 to make the second sleeve.

Finishing.

Figure out what position you would like your buttons in, and place markers there. I picked 3 buttons, but you could do any number you like.

Join your contrasting colour to the bottom right corner of the jacket and ch1, sc evenly up the side of the front opening of the jacket, sc in each stitch around the neckline, sc back down the other side of the front opening, when you reach a stitch marker make a button hole, I chained 3 for my button holes, but you may need more or less depending on the size of your buttons, once you have chained 3 for your button hole sc back into the same space before continuing to sc down the opening. When you reach the bottom, sc in each stitch across the bottom of the jacket until you reach the starting ch1, and slst to join.

End off and weave in all of the tails. Add your buttons and done!

Button Me Up Romper - Newborn Crochet Pattern

Hello beautiful people!

We're almost at the end of March, which means a new newborn sized pattern. YAY!

Today I have something a little different for you. I'm always looking for clever ways to make classics, and this just so happens to be one of those. This romper is side opening! It's one piece, and the back wraps around bubs sides, and buttons to the front of the piece!

Now, how you choose to do the wrap is your choice! I went with the side flaps under the front, and the buttons are sewn to the side flaps. However, you could just as easily sew the buttons to the front, and have the side flaps come up and over the front panel and close that way. Totally up to you which way you go.

The other thing about this pattern is that it uses Worsted Weight yarn! I know, it's not something I do a lot. I just don't have access to a steady stream of this weight of yarn. But I do love it for newborn projects, because boy do they work up FAST!

Today I've used Red Heart Super Saver Solids for the romper, but any Worsted weight yarn would be fine.

This romper is made in one piece, with the exception of the straps, so no joining here, there and everywhere! I've left mine plain, because I haven't yet decided on a recipient, but there are a lot of options for decorations. You could add a pocket. Sew on a flower. Embroider or top stitch an animal or even add some ruffles to the legs!

My doll is wearing a modern cloth nappy, which is quite bulky, so you can see how easily it fits over diapers.

Ok, let's get to it!!

You Will Need:
5mm Hook
Worsted Weight/Aran/10ply Yarn in a main and a contrasting colour.
6 matching buttons

Sized To Fit:
0-3 Months (Newborn)

1: Ch32, dc in the 3rd chain from hook and each across. - 30

2-8: Ch3, turn, dc in each stitch across. - 30

9: Ch1, turn, slip stitch in the first 3 stitches, dc in the next 24 stitches, leave the last 3 stitches unworked. - 24

10: Ch3, turn, dc2tg twice, dc in the next 16 stitches, dc2tg twice. - 20

11: Ch3, turn, dc2tg twice, dc in the next 12 stitches, dc2tg twice. - 16

12: Ch3, turn, dc2tg twice, dc in the next 8 stitches, dc2tg twice. - 12

13-20: Ch3, turn, dc in each stitch across. - 12

21: Ch3, turn, 2dc in the first stitch, dc in the next 10 stitches, 2dc in the last stitch. - 14

22: Ch3, turn, 2dc in the first stitch, dc in the next 12 stitches, 2dc in the last stitch. - 16

23: Ch3, turn, 2dc in the first stitch, dc in the next 14 stitches, 2dc in the last stitch. - 18

24: Ch3, turn, 2dc in the first stitch, dc in the next 16 stitches, 2dc in the last stitch. - 20

25-32: Ch3, turn, sc in each stitch across. -20 End off yarn.

Adding Straps

On the back section of the romper (the edge with the starting chains), count in 9 stitches and join yarn.

1: Ch2, hdc in the same stitch, hdc in the next 2 stitches. - 3
2-16: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across. - 3 End off.

Turn the piece over and count in to the 9th stitch on the other side of the back section and attach yarn. Repeat as for first strap.

Trim:

1: With contrasting colour join to the first stitch on row 32, ch1, sc across (20), continue to sc around the entire piece (working in row ends on the strap and main piece sides), straps included. When you reach corners, make 2sc in them to help with turning, join to the first hdc.

2: Ch1, fpsc around the first stitch, bpsc around the next stitch, *fpsc around the next stitch, .bpsc around the next stitch* repeat around. Join to the first sc.

Alternative Finish: 2: Reverse SC (crab stitch) around.

Attach buttons! You won't need button holes, the buttons should just slot through the stitches.

Makena Newborn Bolero

Morning all!!

I'm so excited about today's pattern! I have to say, I am having an absolute BLAST working on some larger items! It's a huge contrast to the teeny little clothing items I usually make.

Today I'd like to share with you all the pattern for a simple but pretty bolero. I just love these little shrugs, so sweet and dainty and perfect for when the temperature cools off that little bit in the evenings, or when the wind picks up. They look especially sweet over dresses. I loved putting these on my girls when they were smaller.

This one, made as instructed, will fit a baby of 0-3 months, and you should have no problems whipping it up in an afternoon. Oh I love a quick project, don't you?

Bella Booties

Good morning all!

Today's pattern release is for a sweet pair of booties, designed to fit a baby of 0-3 months. It's been a while since I've crocheted for full term newborn sizes, and it's something I'm very excited about doing this year.
These booties are super easy, super fast and... SUPER adorable! The cobble stitch adds a lovely texture, and the contrasting edging some real POP! These would make a fantastic baby shower gift!

Sized To Fit:
0-3 Months

You Will Need:
3mm hook
4ply/light fingering weight yarn in both a main and a contrasting colour. I used cotton, but acrylic would work fine too.
2 small buttons

It's important not to crochet into the joining stitch on the sole, when working in rounds like this, it can look like a stitch, but it isn't.

1: Ch11, hdc into the 2nd ch from hook, hdc in the next 8 chains, 4dc in the last chain, working into the same chains, but on the opposite side of the stitches we just made, hdc in the next 9 chains, join to the first hdc

2: Ch3, 2dc in the same stitch, dc in the next 8 stitches, 2dc in each of the next 4 stitches, dc in the next 8 stitches, 2dc in the last stitch. Join to the first dc.

3: Ch1, 2sc in the same stitch, 2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next 8 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next stitch*, repeat 3 more times, sc in the next 8 stitches, 2sc in each of the last 2 stitches. Join to the first sc. Sole complete. End off yarn.

Grab your stitch markers and mark off the 11th stitch on both sides (count from the the 1st stitch to the right of the join as the centre stitch, the top 2 markers in the photo below), this will leave you with 14 stitches in the toe section between markers. With the right side up and the toe pointing left, join your yarn to the stitch with the marker in it, back loop only.

4: This round will be completed in back loops only: ch1, sc in the same stitch, tr in the next stitch, *sc in the next stitch, tr in the next stitch*, repeat until you reach the next marker. -16sts

5: Ch1, turn, sc in the first 3 stitches, sc2tg, sc in the next stitch, sc2tg, sc2tg, sc in the next stitch, sc2tg, sc in the last 3 stitches. -12sts

6: Ch1, turn, sc in the first stitch, tr in the next stitch, *sc in the next stitch, tr in the next stitch*, repeat across - 12sts

7: Ch1, turn, sc2tg 6 times - 6sts

8: Ch1, turn, sc2tg 3 times - 3sts. End off leaving a longish tail. Take the tail, and slip it back into the ch1 and pull tight to close.

Grab your stitch markers again and mark of the 6th stitch on each side (image above). This next round gets a little tricky because we WANT to crochet into the joining stitch/ending stitch from the last round of the bootie sole, so there are no gaps in the heel of the bootie.

9: With the toe of the bootie pointing right, attach the yarn in the same stitch with the marker closest to your body: ch1,  sc in the same stitch, tr in the next stitch, *sc in the next stitch, tr in the next stitch*, repeat twice, (sc, tr) into the joining stitch, *sc into the next stitch, tr into the next stitch*, repeat twice more to reach the next marker. -14sts

10: Ch1 turn, sc in the first stitch, sc2tg, sc2tg, sc in the next 4 stitches, sc2tg, sc2tg, sc in the last stitch -10sts

11: Ch1, turn, sc in the same sticth, tr in the next, *sc in the next stitch, tr in the next stitch*, repeat across. -10sts. End off.

12: Left Bootie: ch17, sc into the 5th chain from hook, sc in each remaining chain, don't end, simply sc into the first stitch from round 11 and in each stitch across. do not end, continue as below:

Right Bootie: Join yarn to the first stitch from row 11, sc in each stitch across, ch17, sc in the 5th chain from hook and each chain across, when you get to the last chain, slst into the edge of the bootie and continue as below:

Finishing: sc down the side of the heel piece, slst in the 4 un-worked stitches on the sole, sc evenly across the edge of the toe opening (that was 12sc for me), slst in the 4 un-worked stitches on the sole, then sc evenly up the remaining heel edge. End off leaving a long tail. Use the tail to close the gap between the heel and the strap. Note, the right bootie won't have a gap.

Weave in all tails.

Take your contrasting yarn and join it to one of the bootie sides, on the sole, and slip stitch around the entire thing, strap included. Be sure not to pull too tight with your slip stitches, as it may distort the bootie. Weave in the tails.

Attach buttons and your done!!!

27. Hayden Newborn Beanie

Good morning lovelies and welcome to day 27!
Ohh I actually love the number 27! It's my birthday number (of course, that's back in May, but still!) I also LOVE today's pattern!

The Hayden Beanie, is a little unique, in that it's made bottom up! That's right, we make the band first. Now, I know that sometimes counting rows, especially lots of them, can be a right pain, but I use this handy page to keep track! Row Counter is an awesome and simple site, just input your number of rows needed and off you go! So much easier to keep track!

The Hayden Beanie

You Will Need:
DK Weight/8ply Yarn
4mm hook

Sized To Fit:
Newborn/Full Term 40 weeks.

Band:

1: Ch9, sc in the second chain from hook and each across - 8sc
2: Ch1, turn, sc in each stitch across using back loops only. - 8sc
3-49: Repeat row 2.

End off, leaving a long tail. Sew the back together at the ends, being careful not to twist.
The join will be the back of the beanie

Body

1: Attach yarn to one of the edge stitches of the band and ch1, sc in the end rows of the band for 52sc, then join to the first sc

2-5: Ch2, hdc in each stitch around, join to the ch2. -52sc

6: Ch2, hdc in the next 10 stitches, hdc2tg, *hdc in the next 11 stitches, hdc2tg*, repeat around, join to the ch2. - 48hdc

7: Ch2, hdc in the next 5 stitches, hdc2tg, *hdc in the next 6 stitches, hdc2tg*, repeat around, join to the ch2. -42hdc

8: Ch2, hdc in the next 4 stitches, hdc2tg, *hdc in the next 5 stitches, hdc2tg*, repeat around, join to the ch2. -36hdc

9: Ch2, hdc in the next 3 stitches, hdc2tg, *hdc in the next 4 stitches, hdc2tg*, repeat around, join to the ch2. - 30hdc

10: Ch2, hdc in the next 2 stitches, hdc2tg, *hdc in the next 3 stitches, hdc2tg*, repeat around, join to the ch2. - 24hdc

11: Ch2, hdc in the next stitch, hdc2tg, *hdc in the next 2 stitches, hdc2tg*, repeat around, join to the ch2. - 18hdc

12: Ch2, hdc2tg, *hdc in the next stitch, hdc2tg*, repeat around, join to the ch2. - 12hdc

13: Ch2, hdc2tg 5 times, hdc in the last stitch. -7hdc

Leave a long tail and end off. Use the tail to gather the opening closed and finish off, weaving in all tails.

Alternative Colour Optoins
Use a contrasting colour for the band only.
Alternate colours to make stripes on the body of the hat.

25. Quirt Preemie Beanie

Good morning all and welcome to day 25!!!
Today's beanie, the Quirt, is designed for a full term 40 week newborn. However, drop off one increase round and you'll have a size to fit a 38 week preemie.

The quirt hat makes use of slip stitches to create a textured section. I used 3 shades of the same colour for mine to create an ombre effect, but you could use any colours. This is a great beanie to use up those few remaining meters of colour!

Quirt Beanie

You Will need:
4.5mm hook
DK Weight/8Ply Yarn

Sized To Fit:
40 weeks gestation, full term newborn.

1: Into a magic ring, ch1, hdc 9 times, join to the first hdc. -9hdc

2: Ch2, hdc into the same stitch, 2hdc in each stitch around, join to the ch2. -18hdc

3: Ch2, hdc in the same stitch, *hdc in the next stitch, 2hdc in the next stitch*, repeat around, join to the ch2. -27hdc

4: Ch2, hdc in the same stitch, *hdc in the next 2 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch*, repeat around, join to the ch2. -36hdc

Skip this increase for 38 week size.
5: Ch2, hdc in the same stitch, *hdc in the next 3 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch*, repeat around, join to the ch2. -45hdc

6-12: Ch2, hdc in each stitch around, join to the ch2.

13-15: Ch2, hdc in each stitch around, back loops only, join to the ch2.

16: Ch1, sc in each st around, join to the ch1.

End off main colour.

Using various coloured yarn, attach to the loops left from rounds 13-15 and sl st in each stitch around.

Sl st loosely or go up a size in hook to ensure they don't pull tight.

I find instead of slst to the first slst to join the round, just end off with the last slst into the last loop, and tie the ends together before weaving them in. It creates less bulk.

Weave in all tails.

20. Brittany Newborn Beanie

Good Morning all and welcome to day 20! Gosh, only 10 days left!

Today's pattern is something a little different. The Brittany beanie features zigzag puffs!!!
Now, given how puffy the puffs are, this beanie is quite large, and probably the largest one in the collection this year. It will easily fit a 9-10lb baby. But, thats ok! Because as we know, sadly angels come in all sizes, and some wonderful charities out there also provide hats to babbas that are a bit older. Im glad to have something to offer for this size range.

Having said that, if you want to make this one smaller, I would suggest dropping to a 4mm hook AND leaving out round 5 increases. Puffs need to be kept tight, so if your having tension problems, you could downsize your hook for those rounds too.

The Brittany Beanie

7 loop Puff Stitch: *Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through*, repeat twice more. There will be 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all 7 loops

17. Finley Newborn Beanie

Good morning all and hello day 17!

Today's pattern is the Finley beanie, and it's a sweet little aviator style. I love how sweet these look on! This beanie is sized for a full term newborn. It's so nice to have a range of full term sizes in the hat drive this year.  Most organisations I know support loss at every gestation (and some even into the first year) and so I'm really pleased to be able to offer patterns for those families too.

However, if you'd like to make it for a smaller preemie, or your local group focuses on smaller bubs, drop the hook size to a 3mm or 3.5mm

I havn't tried this one with stripes yet, but I bet it would be just as good! Another alternative would be to crab stitch the final round to change it up even more!

Finley Beanie

You Will Need:
DK Weight/8ply yarn, in a main and contrasting colour.
4mm hook
2 Matching Buttons

Sized To Fit:

4: Ch2, turn, hdc2tg, hdc in the next 4 stitches, hdc2tg
5: Ch2, turn, hdc2tg, hdc in the next 2 stitches, hdc2tg
End off, weave in all tails.

Count 22 stitches to the left from the last stitch of the done earflap and reattach yarn
Repeat all earflap steps
End off, weave in all tails.

Adding the front panel. With contrasting colour

1: At the front of the hat, 2 stitches from the left of the right side earflap attach yarn to the front loop only. Ch1, sc in the same stitch and the next 18 stitches, using the front loops only.

2-6: Ch2, turn, hdc in each stitch across.
End off, weaving in tails.

Reattach main colour to rear of hat in any stitch, ch2, hdc in the same stitch, hdc around entire hat edge, including earflaps and brim. When you get to the earflaps, it helps to add a few extra hdc's on the corners of them to prevent curling.

End off and weave in all tails.

Fold brim up, tack into place, and add 2 buttons to decorate.

14. Skyla Beanie

Good morning all and a big hey to day 14!

Today's hat release is the Skyla beanie. Sized for a larger newborn (9-10lb) this hat is an absolute gem. It makes great use of colour to create a combination of wavy and straight lines. Also excellent for using up small pieces of yarn!

If you want to make this one smaller, go ahead and drop to a 3.5mm hook, or drop off one increase round. That will make it closer to 38 weeks, or a 5-6lb newborn.

This beanie is a little more challenging, and uses both triple crochets and double triples. But I've wrote out how to do these stitches for you, and once you have the swing of it, they are pretty easy.

10. Sadie Preemie Bonnet

Good morning lovelies and welcome to day 10! We've hit double digits now, how exciting!
How are you coming along with the hats so far? On target to reach your goals? I am!

Today's pattern is the first bonnet for the year, and boy is it a pretty one. The stitches in this bonnet remind me a little of leaves. It looks complicated, but I promise it isn't, just take it slow if your new to decreases and you'll do great. Also, it's worth noting to take care when counting the skip 3 on row 5, don't count the stitch you worked the sc into.

I do love bonnets so much! They are just adorable. They also have the advantage of being able to fit a larger size range, which is always handy.

I havn't tested this at a larger size yet, but I suspect that if you add one more increase round, and an extra repeat of rows 6-7 you should get newborn size. I'll come back and update when I have time to try it.

4.5mm hook
