Eyes: Make 2
ch4 (counts as ch1 and first dc), dc into the first ch twice. ch1, turn, sc 3.
Sew onto hat

Mouth.
Using black yarn, backstitch a mouth on the front of your beanie. You can get a bit creative with the mouth shape, option for a smile, or a more traditional zigzag.

Of course, you could leave the eyes and mouth of completely and just use the hat as a pumpkin instead of a jack-o-lantern.

Rosies Cozies - Intro and Minnie/Mickey patterns

Hello beautiful people.

This week I read a post on Facebook by Rosies Cozies asking for help with patterns for their latest colleciton. If you'r not already aware of Rosies Cozies, pop on over and have a look.

The latest collection is based around Halloween, fall, thanksgiving and Christmas, however they are having a hard time finding preemie patterns of this nature.

Well, the idea of working up tiny little costumed hats just appeals to me! I know here in Aus they probably wouldn't be as popular, but Halloween and Thanksgiving are such large parts of American culture that I can imagine the parents and families of nicu bubs would get a lot of comfort from these types of beanies. Not to mention any younger siblings that might be overjoyed at the idea of their little brother or sister getting to join in with Halloween!

So for the next 2 weeks we'll be having a Rosies Cozies special here at Mamma That Makes. A variety of fun and funky hats for the festive season! We hope you enjoy these patterns, and if you can, send some along to Rosies Cozies, They would LOVE to reach their goal and I'm sure with everyone's help we can certainty make this happen! You can read more about this collection and get the address for posting HERE

Most beanies will come in multiple sizes too!

Now on to the first pattern!

Mini Gathered Flats - Crocheted Preemie Booties

Good morning everyone,

Today I have another little bootie pattern for you. This one is for bubs of 30 weeks gestation, working up with a 6cm sole and with only 5 rounds and a simple gathered tie, they are super fast to make and excellent scrap busters.

You will need:

3mm hook
dk weight (8ply) yarn in main colour
a very small amount of yarn in a contrasting colour for the gather and bow. I have used 3/4/5/8 ply successfully. You could also use ribbon.

R1: ch9, dc in the 3rd from hook twice, dc in the next 5 chains, 4dc in the end chain, Working on the opposite side of the stitches just made (into the backs o the chains) dc in the next 5 stitches, 2dc in the 1st stitch, join.
R2: ch1, 2sc in each of the next 2 stitches, sc in the next 6 stitches, 2sc in each of the next 2 stitches, sc in the next 6 stitches, 2sc in each of the next 2 stitches, join. -24
R3: ch3, dc back loop only in each stitch around, join. -24
R4: ch2, hdc in the first 7 stitches, hdc2tg 5 times, hdc in the last 7 stitches, join. -19
R5: ch1, sc in each stitch around, join.

Take a small length of yarn or ribbon and starting at the toe, weave it in and out of the sc stitches from R5. Pull slightly to gather the ankle opening a little and tie a bow.

Repeat a second time for the next bootie, and you are finished! 1 set from start to finish takes me about 20 minutes. Super fast!

Chunky Christmas Bonnets

*waves* Hi guys!

I don't know about you, but I tend to find that I have all these plans for things to make for Christmas, and then BAM! before you know it December is here and you haven't finished even a half of what you planned.

In order to combat this, Im starting early! Today I have for you all a chunky and super fast Christmas bonnet, that comes in both 0-3 and 3-6 months. Of course, you could use any colours and turn it into something non Christmasy, but thats what I went with. Instructions below are for a solid coloured bonnet, and one that has a stripe. There are also 2 tie methods, go with whatever one suits you best. Ive also made this with pom pom yarn for the ties, and strands of thick n thin. They all look wonderful!

Christmas Bonnets

You will need:
DK weight yarn, bonnets are worked holding 2 strands together, so 2 balls of each colour needed or wind off half a ball so you have 2.
10mm hook
140 inches (3.8yards, 3.6meters)of ribbon

Solid Bonnet with Ribbon Ties

Leave a 12 inch end at the start so you can sew in the back of the bonnet.

1: ch22 (0-3) or 24 (3-6), in the second chain from hook (sc, dc) *skip one ch, (sc, dc) in the next, repeat across, turn

2-9: ch1, *sk 1 stitch, (sc, dc) in the next stitch*, Repeat from * across Do not end off

For 3-6 months only: Repeat above row one more time.

Using the tail you left from the start of the chains, sew up the back of the bonnet. Weave in ends.

10: ch1, sc evenly along the bottom edge of the bonnet right around until you reach the opposite corner. Do not sc along the front of the bonnet. Finish off and weave in ends.

Cut 4 strands of ribbon 20 inches long. Using 2 for each corner, loop them in half and insert the loop into the corner, pull the loose ends of the ribbon through the loop to create a knot and pull tight. Using the remaining ribbon weave it in and out of the last row of the bonnet (I so in between the groups of sc/dc) Once the ribbon is even tie carefully at the corners to prevent it moving, then trim the ends of the ribbon ties to make sure they are all the same length.

Striped Bonnet with Braided Ties

Leave a 12 inch end at the start so you can sew in the back of the bonnet.

0-3 Months
Starting with main colour
1: ch22 , in the second chain from hook (sc, dc) *skip one ch, (sc, dc) in the next, repeat across, turn

2-5: ch1, *sk 1 stitch, (sc, dc) in the next stitch*, Repeat from * across, turn

6-7: Switching to contrasting colour: ch1, *sk 1 stitch, (sc, dc) in the next stitch*, Repeat from * across, turn

8-9 Switching back to main colour: ch1, *sk 1 stitch, (sc, dc) in the next stitch*, Repeat from * across, do not end off (follow All Sizes below.

3-6 Months
Starting with main colour
1: ch24 , in the second chain from hook (sc, dc) *skip one ch, (sc, dc) in the next, repeat across, turn

2-6: ch1, *sk 1 stitch, (sc, dc) in the next stitch*, Repeat from * across, turn

7-8: Switching to contrasting colour: ch1, *sk 1 stitch, (sc, dc) in the next stitch*, Repeat from * across, turn

9-10: Switching back to main colour: ch1, *sk 1 stitch, (sc, dc) in the next stitch*, Repeat from * across, do not end off (follow All Sizes below.

ALL SIZES
Using the tail you left from the start of the chains, sew up the back of the bonnet. Weave in ends.

10: ch1, sc evenly along the bottom edge of the bonnet right around until you reach the opposite corner. Do not sc along the front of the bonnet. Finish off and weave in ends.

Cut 3 strands each of main and contrasting colours per corner, fold in half, pull the loop through the corner of the bonnet, and then pull the loose ends back through the loop, pulling tight to create a knot. Braid strands. Repeat for other corner.
