The Halo Beanie

Good morning all and welcome to day 30, and the last hat pattern for the #ittybittygianthatdrive
Wow its been one whirlwind of a month! Hats, more hats, a house move and more hats! September sure has been crazy busy, and I love it! Chaos and all. It's now time to start gathering your hats together, print out the posting form from the website, weave in any tails (gah, this part lol) and get ready to post your hats on October 15th. The address you'll need is

Chance's Clothes Project
c/- Cowra Neighbourhood Centre
15 Vaux St
Cowra NSW 2794
Australia

Today's hat it the Halo Beanie. Named after a beautiful baby that started me on my journey of preemie pattern designs. When I first learnt to crochet, I knew I wanted to do something more with it, something meaningful. I was searching the internet and came across a group on Facebook called Project Halo, that made teeny beanies for teeny babies. This became my first stop on the road to where I am now. Project Halo eventually merged into what was Little Angels Memory Boxes, or simply, LAMB. A challenge was issued for people to design some patterns for micropreemies and I thought well.. why not! I took that first step into designing. I look back at my first hats now and cringe some, I knew I could do better. So I spent a lot of time practising, learning stitches and joining methods, playing with yarns and sizes and colours.

LAMB eventually closed down, after serving its purpose for some time, and from there I was lead to Chance's Clothes Project, whom I still to this day support, and the recipient of the Itty Bitty Giant Hat Drive's hats. With the encouragement and support of the members from CCP I branched out into clothing, cocoons and booties for preemies and have not looked back! I think by this stage its fair to say I now have the largest collection of free preemie crochet patterns, ranging from size 0-8 weeks to full term, anywhere on the net. That was the goal, and Im so proud to achieve it. I'd have never ever got to this point if it wasn't for Halo and mamma Laura starting me on this journey.

A huge thankyou to everyone who joined in with the hat drive. It means so very much not only to myself, but to countless families across Australia, and indeed the globe, who's hearts are breaking. Thankyou for being the change.

The Emery Beanie

Good morning lovlies, and welcome day to day 29, the second last hat pattern day! Woah time has flown hasn't it!

The Emery Beanie was one of them by chance creations, that is somewhat based on the Mathieu Beanie from earlier in the month. I love love the 3rd loop only stitches, they look almost knitted and add a great texture and contrast to an otherwise plain beanie. The colour combinations here are endless, however I really love using different shades of the same colour for this one. You could even shake it up and do the 3rd loop rounds with multiple colours!

The Keegan Beanie

Hello hello all and hello too to the 28th day of our 30 days of preemie patterns!

Today's beanie is a basic but sweet little beanie. It has delicate tiny earflaps and a super sweet contrasting pompom. The pompom would be great for using up small pieces of speciality yarn to give it that extra pop.
For those who don't know how to make pompoms, its very simple. I use the fork method for small ones, and there is a great picture tutorial for that right here.

The Keegan Beanie

Sized To Fit:
14-16 Weeks Gestation

Measurements:
7.5cm in height from crown to earflap (not including pompom)
5.5cm in height from crown to brim
8cm in width across the brim

You Will Need:
2.5mm hook
5ply/Sports Weight Yarn in a main and contrasting colour. I used 4 Seasons Marvel in 5ply.

With main colour

1. dc 12 times in a magic ring, join. (12)

2. ch2, hdc in the same stitch, 2hdc in each stitch around, join. (24)

3-6. ch2, hdc in each stitch around, join.

7. ch1, sl st in the next 6 stitches, hdc in the next 3 stitches, ch1, turn, hdc in the next 3 stitches, ch1, turn, hdc3tg. End off.

8. count off 10 stitches to the left of the completed earflap and attach yarn. ch2, hdc in the next 2 stitches, turn, ch1, hdc in the next 3 stitches, ch1, turn, hdc3tg, do not end off.

9. ch1, sc evenly down the side of the earflap, sc in each stitch around, and evenly around the second earflap, back to the ch1 and join. End off and weave in tails.

Make a small pompom  with contrasting colour and attach to the top of the beanie.

Hello beautiful people, and hello to day 26!
Today's beanie is a sweet little newsboy cap. It uses the hdc granite stitch (also called the moss stitch when sc'd) It's a lovely little cap and works up super fast. The Gabriel beanie will fit a bub of 22 weeks gestation. I think it would look extra sweet with a button on the side, but I managed to pack all my buttons ready for the move, oops! The Shelle Beanie

Good morning beautiful people and welcome to day 25. Wowser not long left now!

Today's beanie is named after.. Myself! Its got many components to it, kind of like me. You will need to concentrate for this beanie, and if you are a beginner, I suggest printing the pattern out and highlighting the rounds as you go. On all of my patterns, if you scroll to the bottom of the post you will see a bright green PRINT button, which gives you a print friendly version :)

The Shelle beanie will fit a full term newborn baby. It uses 5 different coloured yarns, and has 18 rounds, all different. I have to say, this one really challenged me. I've been wanting to do something like it for a while now but truth be told, math isn't a strong suit of mine, and I struggled with getting the stitch types and repeats to work. It took me longer then it probably should have, but I think the end result is totally worth it! I love how cheerful this beanie is. I can't wait to see what colour combinations you all use!

You can choose to drop and pick up yarns or end off and rejoin each colour. I used the drop and pick up method, just be sure not to pull them too tight when you swap colours over.

The Luke Beanie

Good morning all and welcome to day 17! We sure are ploughing through the days now.
Today's beanie is a fairly simple one, but also a great introduction to colour changes if you are unfamiliar with them. The Luke beanie will fit a baby of 24 weeks gestation, and is a breeze to work up. You Will Need:
3mm hook

Day 11 and another sweet beanie. Today's beanie, the Tyler, is such a pretty stitch! I really enjoyed this one, and I can't wait to use the same stitch for some matching pieces down the track. This hat is worked in the round, so you will need a stitch marker or piece of yarn to mark each round. The Mathieu Beanie

Morning all, and welcome to day 8 and the start of week 2.

Today's beanie is a fun and funky number. It uses a 3rd loop stitch that creates a knit look in sections of the hat. This beanie is sized to fit 40 weeks gestation (full term) I think sometimes we tend to forget that occasionally even bubs that make it to full term end up in the NICU, so I thought it would be a good idea to add in some larger ones as well.

Of course, you could easily make this one smaller, just drop to DK/Light worsted yarn, or even 4ply/fingering with a 3mm hook. Its fantastic for using up smaller pieces of variegated yarn, they really pop against a light solid colour.

When doing stripe work, I tend to drop and pick up my colours, rather than ending and rejoining. Less tails to weave in, and I know how much most crocheters hate weaving tails!

The Wyatt Beanie

Good morning beautiful people and welcome to day 6!
Today's beanie is a pretty simple one, but quite delicate and great for people who are learning to do back loop stitches. It uses different height stitches and back loops to create a little texture, and works up pretty quickly. Designed to fit approx 18 weeks gestation, so this is quite a small hat.

The Wyatt Beanie

Sized To Fit:
18 Weeks gestation

Finished Measurements
8cm across the widest section of the hat
7cm in total height

You Will Need:
4ply Yarn. I used King Cole Bamboo
2mm Hook

Join to the top of the starting chain. Unless otherwise instructed, do not stitch into the same space as the chain.

1. dc 10 times into a magic ring (or ch2, dc 10 times into first chain), join. (10)

2. ch2, dc in the same stitch, 2dc in each stitch around, join. (20)

3. ch2, dc in the same stitch, *dc in the next stitch, 2dc in the next stitch*, repeat around, join. (30)

4. ch2, dc in the same stitch, *dc in the next 2 stitches, 2dc in the next stitch*, repeat around, join. (40)

From here on out, all joins should be done in the back loop of the chain rather than through both loops
